Trashy Tuesday, SHUT THE FRONT DOOR, it’s that good.

It is Trashy Tuesday, and you know what that means.

I AM TALKING TRASH TODAY, YOU HAVE TO SIT DOWN FOR THIS ONE

First…..I wanted to shout out  and give myself a pat on the back….My tutorial on “How to Make Anything look like Real Wood” is being featured at “Embracing Change”!

Now back to Le Trash:

I may have mentioned somewhere along the way here that I really wished for a beautiful built in type work space for  my family room.  I had some ideas in place, a nice desk, vintagey feel, I wanted to use some of the many bookshelves I have on hand, add some moulding and pull it all together with some paint.

And, for some reason, I wanted it NOW.  Even though it has been on my mind for a while, and I PROMISED myself I would finish my Master Bedroom makeover before I dumped it for another room…..The built in idea cut in line when  I was at a client’s home admiring her newly built gorgeous built in, and this one from Corrie at Red Hen Home.

Remember how I said, if you think about it, eventually it will show up in the trash somewhere, for free?  Well guess what.

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR, OPEN IT AND SHUT IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!

I found it.  On a whim. I was not in my usual “area” of cruising for dumpsters, but I decided to swing past an industrial area of town (I do this occasionally, found a couch there once).  Friday morning, all by it’s lonesome, was the desk of my dreams, left for dead outside a warehouse.

It was massive.  I knew even my strength would be no match to heave-ho this thing into my van.  What’s a girl to do?  To prevent someone else from taking my treasure, I took all the drawers, headed home to get the kids off to school.  Went back, now it  was about 8:00 a.m.  Perfect time to find some helpful men arriving for work at nearby warehouses.  Back to my treasure.  Sure enough, only had to wait about one minute, when not one, but TWO guys showed up for work and I used my charming persuasive personality to convince them (asked nicely) if they would help me get the beast into my van.

Are your eyes rolling back in your head now, or is that just moi?

Amazing part two.  Once I got it home, I found with the right amount of just inching it out of my van + dragging it into house + lifting inch by inch onto furniture gliders = me getting into the place where it will actually live.

Here is my final vision.  Two smaller bookcases I already own and purchased for $5 each.  This top cut down from last week’s Trash find to top the book shelves and make it look like one unit:

(Not the decorative shelf on top, which I did fix up and am selling at Paris Flea ;)

Painted cream to coordinate with my cabs, can you see it?

And!  I bought this chair last month for $35 from a Thrift Store.  It is in perfect condition, just needs a little TLC.  The same chair (not as nice I might add is selling at Pottery Barn for $399!!!

I know, I know, you are all applauding. Trust me, my back is aching from taking a bow.  Or maybe it was from moving the desk……..

I had and used one of these desks for years but I eventually retured it and chopped it up for parts. Looking forward to seeing your built in finished, probably as much as you are. Don’t hurt yourself. And to the question you asked the other day I’m trying to get photos together for you to show you my wood storage set up.

I knew those womanly wiles would come in handy – and of course asking those two men to help (while you were wearing high heels doesn’t hurt either)!

Love the desk – love the chair – and can’t wait to see it after you put your fabulous spin on it!

You do know I am going to have to stop speaking to you, right?

That desk is going to be ah-mazing in your hands. And yes, I love it… but with that chair as a pair… it’s off the charts!!!!

Oh my goodness, not only are you dumpster diving, but you’re waiting for random men to come along and lift heavy objects into your van. Girl, you are cracking me up!!! And I love that you took the drawers with you! So clever! … That desk really is awesome! … I’m telling you, one day you will get a call from the airport saying, “I’m here, come pick me up!”

Doesn’t the perfect junk always weigh the most!? But look at you wooing the workers to help you and then finding a way to get it moved again little by little when you got home. Bravo! Love a happily ever after junk story.

Where there is a will there is a way. I’m not surprised at all that you could haul the beast into your house on your own. Might be that type A personality thing again… patience in waiting for someone to come home to help would take too long.
